University of Delaware Summer College Program

Applying to the Program

Fees and Aid
Fees
Welcome to Summer College photo Summer College is an excellent value! The Program Fee covers tuition for your courses, the room and board plan, library privileges, lab fees, and all group recreational costs. It does NOT include the cost of books, any meals obtained off campus, the fee for Private Music Study, or spending money.
2008 Resident Program Fee: $2,595*
2008 Non-Resident Program Fee: $5,095
* The Delaware Department of Education provides funding that allows a Program Fee reduction for Delaware residents.

In addition, there is a non-refundable $50 application fee and, upon acceptance, students are required to pay a $100 nonrefundable deposit toward the Program Fee to hold their seats in classes.

All fees must be paid with cash, check, money order, or cashier’s check. Unfortunately, we cannot process credit card payments.

Fee Waiver
Parents or legal guardians who are University of Delaware employees should call the Summer College office at (302) 831-6560 to learn how they may use their Course Fee Waiver benefit for Summer College tuition.

Scholarships
A limited number of academic merit scholarships are available to qualified Summer College students. All students are considered for scholarship awards; there is no separate application process.

Financial Aid
Students demonstrating both outstanding academic ability and financial students at beach need are given first priority for financial aid. International students are not eligible for financial aid due to the differences between national currencies and the difficulty in assessing need.

To apply for financial aid, students and parents/legal guardians must complete the Confidential Financial Aid Request form (Form C) and return it postmarked by May 1, 2008. (This form will be available by January 20.) Please read the entire "Eligibility" section below before completing the Confidential Financial Aid Request form.

Please note: The Summer College Application form (Form A) and application fee must be submitted prior to or in conjunction with the Confidential Financial Aid Request form (Form C). Financial need has no bearing on the decision to admit or not admit an applicant to Summer College; therefore, the Summer College office will NOT evaluate the Confidential Financial Aid Request form (Form C) before making an admissions decision nor before receiving the Summer College Application form (Form A).

Since Summer College has limited financial aid resources, you are encouraged to explore other aid options locally and at the following (nonendorsed) web sites if you need further assistance in affording Summer College:

NOTE: Delaware residents, it is unfortunate, but Ferguson Scholarships cannot be used for Summer College fees.

Eligibility

** Please read the Eligibility information in its entirety before completing the Confidential Financial Aid Request form and/or Summer College Application Form.**

High school students who will have completed their sophomore or junior year by June 2008 and will be at least 16 years of age by July 12, 2008 are eligible to apply to Summer College 2008. Applicants must demonstrate strong academic ability (as demonstrated by a rigorous high school curriculum), interest, and initiative. Social maturity and a sense of responsibility to oneself and to others are extremely important since students manage their own daily schedule, including moving on and off campus and organizing study, sleep and recreational hours.

Residency
A prospective Summer College student must meet residency requirements to be able to pay the resident Program Fee. Generally, this means the student must have been domiciled in Delaware for a minimum of 12 months prior to July 2008.
students smiling Please note that a student who is not domiciled in Delaware but attends a private school in Delaware is considered a non-resident and must pay the non-resident Program Fee.

Students who do not have a Permanent Resident Visa are considered non-residents regardless of how long they have attended school or lived in Delaware and must pay the non-resident Program Fee.

Medical Information
Summer College students have access to the Newark or Christiana Hospital Emergency rooms and local hospitals for routine and serious medical care. While the program purchases a basic accident and sickness insurance policy for Summer College students, parents or legal guardians are ultimately responsible for their student’s health insurance and payment of all uncovered medical costs. More information and health forms will be made available to students who are accepted to the Summer College program.

Application Process Information
Applications will be available by January 20 and may be submitted at your convenience. However, we suggest you submit your application as early as possible since classes fill quickly. Applications must be accompanied by a $50 nonrefundable application fee, payable in cash, check, money order, or cashier’s check.

students in lab Admission decisions will be made shortly after an application is complete. A complete application consists of the Summer College Application form (Form A) - including essays; two recommendation forms (Form B) if you are a current junior or three recommendation forms (Form B) if you are a current sophomore; complete high school transcript including your current year's grades; PSAT/SAT scores; and the non-refundable application fee.

Applications received after May 15, 2008 will be considered on a space available basis.

Once accepted, a student will be requested to submit a non-refundable $100 deposit to be applied against the Program Fee by May 31 to hold his or her place in the requested courses. The remainder of the Program Fee, minus financial aid and scholarships, is to be sent to the Summer College Office by June 15, 2008.

Admitted students will receive more information in mid-June including their course schedule, room assignment, and packing suggestions.
